Your doctor will want you to do a few things first, because putting you on a sleep medication is a huge deal. Sleep medications are habit forming, meaning that if you start them you likely won't be able to sleep without them ever again.
They'll want you to keep a sleep diary to keep note of when you slept and for how long. They will also want you to cut out all caffeine, and to develop a bedtime routine (turn off the TV, no homework, just quiet activities, warm milk or bedtime tea) to see if that helps. They will also be checking to see if there are other underlying medical conditions that could be causing your insomnia.
So yes, you absolutely should talk to your doctor. ]
Of course you need to ask your doctor if it is right for you. You could pick out the wrong sleep medication and cause harm to yourself. Your doctor will know exactly what you need. I hope I helped. ]
