Why shouldn't I kill myself?

Question Posted Monday January 31 2011, 11:18 am

I'm 61 and have been in a lot of pain for a long time. I've spent thousands of dollars over several years on chiropractors. I have really bad gluacoma. I've been unemployed for several years and am probably considered unemployable. At least, I don't know how I could fit in anymore. I was collecting unemployment comp until it ran out in November, now I'm broke and my landlord wants me out.
I can barely get out of bed and into my pants. I am a lonely, sick, tired, depressed old man. I came here to find out how to end it all as painlessly as possible and I'm finding a lot of platitudes from religious people. I used to be somewhat religious and full of guilt but gave up on it a few years ago. I don't believe in hell. I want to end the suffering. Any ideas?

Baby, it does get better.

Right now it seems like there is no where to turn and life isn't worth it. But that also means there is no where to go but up.

Why shouldn't you kill yourself?
First off, you are here now for a reason. If God, or destiny, whatever you believe, thought you shouldn't be alive, then you wouldn't be here. For some reason, unknown right now, you ARE here.

You could find a new purpose, find love, find happiness. It is possible for everyone, and I mean that.

You may not know it, but I bet there are people who would be heart broken if you killed yourself. Death is like throwing a rock into a pond; it creates ripples.

You mentioned religion in your question. Could this be God calling you back to him? I suggest going to your local church or temple or whatever religion calls to you. Talk to the priest. He wont turn you away. Perhaps the church can offer you monetary assistance as well as spiritual assistance.

Are there any family or friends that you can reach out to? Relationships are important, whether they be romantic or platonic. Try to re-ignite old bonds and even meet new people.

Do you have a bucket list? Now may be the time to make one. It will give you something to look forward to! Pick up a book you have been dying to read but never found the time to. You can lose yourself in the pages, and perhaps make a friend with a fellow fan at the library.

Take control of your health. My experience with a chiropractor left me worse off, so I would cut your losses and stop seeing one if they don't give you permanent relief of pain. Research diet plans and hollistic methods. These can be more affordable for you.

See what the government can do for you in terms of assistance, like food stamps, welfare, etc. Whatever you have to do to get back on your feet.

Please try to find hope within yourself. Things can and WILL improve. With faith, hope, and action you can turn your life around.

Good luck,

-Abby

We are given one life, That life is what we make of it.

Everyone goes through their share of tough times. First, Lets backtrack on what you've posted above..

I'm not sure what state you are in, However at 61 have you tried to push for early retirement?..This could be possible. Social Security is another option if you are unable to work, You can file for disability.

Depressed: Seeing a therapist or a psychiatrist is recommended if you haven't done so, If you cannot get out of bed I believe they can arrange it so they come to your house on a weekly basis.

Religion: It is never too late to follow your beliefs, Sometimes people don't end up following their religion until later in life, Sometimes people start early but remember it is never to late. There are always ways to fix things, We just need to take it one step at a time, The first thing is you should call for help. If I'm correct I believe you can file for social security right over the internet and while you qualify it shouldn't be a long wait. Suicide is not the answer, Friends and family would long hurt if you do so. We are given one life to live, and to fix our problems is always possible and sometimes that is even with the help of others.
