Hello my wedding ring is 10K white gold and it recently just started irritating my finger. It's all red and really itchy. I work in a kitchen so of course i help with dishes and i recently started doing this about 2 months ago but just developed the irritation about 2 weeks ago. I was wondering if maybe im allergic to the chemical in the dish water/sanitizer? I started wearing my ring around my neck and tried staying away from dishes but my finger doesn't look any better. I've tried putting lots of lotion on it but still no results. Any suggestions? I also tried wearing my ring on another finger and no break outs have started. Thanks for the help everyone!
aperson88 answered Monday January 10 2011, 10:34 am: your should see a skin doctor. i think maybe the gold reacted with the chemicals (sanitizers). or maybe you're starting to get allergic to the chemicals in the sanitizers either way you need to see a doctor and wear a glove while doing the dishes in any case. i saw a similar situation and the doctor said that she should get any chemicals on it no even soap. so since you cant do that you need to wear a glove. here is a link you can see the glove that you need to wear [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
and here is site that talks about rashes from gold wedding rings you might want to look at this, it also has pictures so you can see if this is whats happening to you or not at least it will tell you if its the ring or the sanitizer: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
and as for the dish washing liquid/ sanitizer:
DISHWASHING LIQUIDS, AUTOMATIC: Usually contain bleaching agents, artificial dyes (see “DYES”), ethyl alcohol, and artificial fragrances (see “FRAGRANCES”). Undiluted, may act as a strong skin irritant. If swallowed, may burn your throat. In those products containing bleaching agents, chloramine gas may be created whose fumes may cause swelling and tearing of eyes or even faintness. Over a prolonged period of time these fumes may cause headaches, lung irritation, nausea, and depression. In extreme cases, prolonged exposure may even cause coma and possibly, death! Label precautions read “WARNING!”
simply start wearing a glove, go to the doctor to get a cream for the irritation and dont wear you wedding ring for awhile till it heals.
hope that helped abit. [ aperson88's advice column | Ask aperson88 A Question ]
