The loans were not federal. It was a private loan.

Wow, that's very surprising. Unless this loan company had sued you in court and received a judgement against you they had absolutely no right to withdraw money from your acct. Unless of course you had one point had agreed to allow them to directly withdraw payments (this could even have been in little tiny letters somewhere on correspondence from them). If it were me, the first thing I would do would be to withdraw any money from my bank acct asap because you're going to run into this problem every month. You might just have switch to using only cash or money orders for everything at least for awhile. Student loan companies can be ruthless bloodsuckers. Trust me, I know. Good luck!
