Question Posted Friday November 19 2010, 8:05 pm

I am 17/f and I just got a new job as a sales associate. I really need the money and it's the only job I can get right now, but I pretty much hate it. I feel useless half of the time when I am there and then the rest of the time I feel overwhelmed with rude customers and coworkers. The majority of the time I am re-folding clothes (SO STUPID) or doing the register (SO NERVE WRACKING). The rest of the time annoying customers are asking me questions that I don't know the answer to because I am new, so I always have to ask my manager and it makes me feel dumb. I have to work eight hours on Saturday and Sunday and I just need some advice on how to make the day go by faster. I just dread going there and I want to have a little something to look forward to! Thank you.

Honestly? The best way to get through this is to force yourself to have a better attitude.

Sure, folding clothes seems stupid. But there's a reason you need to do it, right? So that the store looks good. If you went into a store and it was a huge mess, you wouldn't shop there, right? So really, it's not that stupid, just boring and mindless. It does give you time to zone out and get lost in your thoughts, though.

Make an effort to make friends with your co-workers. You're not going to make friends by being negative. Be cheery and positive, and you'll find that they're not so terrible.

The register will get easier with time. You just need a little experience. Know that you don't look dumb when you have to ask your manager: everyone who has ever had a job has had to be trained for it. If someone gets huffy, just explain nicely that you're in training and thank them for their patience. The customers aren't asking questions to annoy you. It's kind of your job to be there to answer them. Don't you ever ask questions of employees when you're shopping?

As for other ways to help the day go faster, I would suggest shoe inserts. I always got really sore feet working retail back in high school. I also made games out of EVERYTHING that I did (time trials and the like). Taking pride in your work, even if it's meaningless and tedious is important too. If you do a really good job helping someone, be happy about that. You might have made their day. If you made a shelf look nice, that's an accomplishment too.

Having a positive attitude will fix a lot of problems in your life. This is just one of them.
