It's less common for women to get pregnant during their period but it happens. Most women are more fertile when they are ovulating (ie: releasing an egg from an ovary). Sometimes women actually will ovulate very late in their cycle or even while they are menstruating.
Always, always, always use protection. There is never, ever a time where you aren't fertile. There is never a time where you absolutely cannot get pregnant. All of that junk are just myths told by other teens who don't understand fertility or reproduction.
Condoms are always a must.
Hormonal birth control pills would also be preferred.
If you feel comfortable taking the morning after pill then this might be one of those times. It depends on how much you're willing to risk the possibility of pregnancy.
Lots of people get pregnant during these one-time instances. I know more than one person who got pregnant while losing their virginity. My cousin was told she was completely infertile and she had sex with a guy who was told he was completely infertile due to a childhood injury--their FIRST time doing she wound up pregnant.
In the end, you're the only person you can rely on to keep yourself healthy. Listen to you body. Take good care of it and do what is smart, even if it isn't the most convenient thing to do at the time. Condoms aren't expensive and can save a lot of money and worries.
