Virgins can be born with herpes or contract them by their own parents. There are many, many, many mothers and fathers on herpes help forums that panic because during diaper changes they forgot to wash their hands and ended up transmitting the herpes virus--resulting in very painful sores for baby to have to deal with and the parents becoming confused as what to tell the child when it is older. It's becoming pretty common now because it's SO easy to forget to wash your hands BEFORE a diaper change. For note, many parents are so embarrassed about this they choose not to tell their child that the sores they sometimes experience are not normal. In addition to that problem, some people can go longer than 10 years without ever having a visible sore or symptom of the herpes--making it possible for someone to not even KNOW they have herpes for quite some time.
(Yes, herpes can be spread even if there is not a sore present.)
Pregnant women can also transmitted herpes (hsv-1 or hsv-2) to their infants during birth. This is why is it VERY important to tell your OB/GYN if you have herpes during pregnancy so that they can take precautions during childbirth (i.e.: not allow vaginal birth and pray the c-section doesn't end up resulting in infection). Many times the babies become blind though when the mother gives birth vaginally and has hsv-1 or hsv-2 on her genitals.
And, last but not least, even masturbation can cause you to contract things like herpes or even HPV strains. Unclean hands can carry so much bacteria, and new studies are finding live strains of STDs deep underneath the nailbeds where most people just don't scrub down before they touch themselves.
For a factual event: I contracted HSV-1 from my mother by drinking after her occasionally. My parents are completely against kissing children on the lips so it was not contracted that way. My strain came from sipping my mother's hot beverages while we waited for my bus to arrive when I was 4 years old (in kindergarten). At 4 years old, yes, I was a virgin ;) and, although it was quite some time ago, I can remember my first outbreak very clearly.
