Question Posted Monday September 27 2010, 10:50 pm

It doesn't happen very often but I was just sitting here then all of a sudden my bottom lip got hot, then a little sore then a bump appeared. It's gone already which is like 5 minutes later. Any ideas on why this happened or what it could have been?

Well, actually, it could be herpes.

I, personally, have dealt with HSV-1 ever since I was about 4 years old. I contracted it by drinking after my mother. HSV-1 is also referred to as coldsores, fever blisters, and oral herpes. It can be contracted a number of ways.

Most times an outbreak will fully blister out, burst, weep, hurt, and ache. The sores can leave scar tissue behind.

Sometimes I get the same thing you're talking about where I usually have my outbreaks. The lip will become very warm and a little bump will begin to appear. Sometimes it never blisters out. Sometimes I can also catch it in enough time that I can reduce the swelling and prevent a possible outbreak from occurring.

If you want to be sure if you have hsv-1 then request a full STD screening at your local doctor. Ask him to test for both types of herpes and see what happens. The test will be a blood test and is usually fairly accurate in telling if you have herpes or not.

If you are infected then you can spread it to people you kiss (anywhere on the body). The infected cells will shed whenever they want--even when there is not a bump present--so it's important to take precautions, inform partners before putting them at risk, and be smart about what you do with your mouth.
