oohh the romanticism period was my absolute favourite in art history. what my teacher taught me was that it was a time in europe when everyone wanted to rebel against all the "generic" forms of art and have an emphasis on facial and body expressions and emotion. most of the works of art revolved around despair, depression, stress, and dying. some people, like myself, connect it also to the baroke(sp) period in art, where everything had emphasized movement and action, even though they were standing still.

henri fuseli created a piece called "the nightmare" in which a woman is asleep and a demon is straddling (or maybe even raping) her in her sleep. this was a romanticism piece in a sense that she is being tortured while in a place where there should only be peace.

and during the wartime in europe, most of the romanticism pieces pertained to that subject. sculptures were of women and children dying and starving, and men were being attacked or were injured and weak. its very interesting once you find inspiration in it.

i hope i helped :) and if you have anymore questions, feel free to ask.
