I'll be honest in saying I don't read much comics. I never have, really, but I have absolutely nothing against comic books. Anyway, I did a little looking to see if I could find something you might be interested in and I ran into this line:

"Identity Crisis was parodied in the six-part limited series Ambush Bug: Year None"

Now, you probably know more than I do but if you didn't know about this Ambush Bug: Year None then maybe you want to pick up and copy (or copies?) and check it out? Oh, and for note, I did get that information from Wikipedia:

That being said, did you take a look at the Watchmen works? The movie was a great hit and people seem to really like the graphic novel, too.

Here is a short list I found online of DC comics you might want to check into if you haven't already:

Watchmen
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: The Black Dossier; The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen Volume 1 & Volume 2
V for Vendetta
The Sandman Volume 1: Preludes & Nocturnes
The Sandman: Endless Nights
Fables Volume 1: Legends in Exile
Superman for All Seasons
All Star Superman Volume 1
Superman/Batman: Public Enemies
Batman: Arkham Aslyum
Batman: The Long Halloween
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns
Batman: The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Batman: Year One
Batman: Hush (Volume 1 & Volume 2)
Kingdom Come
JLA Volume 1: New World Order
Green Lantern: Rebirth
Crisis on Infinite Earths
Transmetropolitan Volume 1: Back on the Street
Pride of Baghdad
Hellblazer: Original Sins
Y: The Last Man Volume 1: Unmanned
Kamizae Kaito Jeanne
Crayon Shinchan Volume 1
Ex Machina Volume 1: The First Hundred Days

Other people suggest:

Final Crisis
Batman: No Man's Land
Superman: Red Son
Superman: Birthright
DC: The New Frontier
Kingdom Come
The Sandman: Seasons of Mist
Salvation Run
The Killing Joke
Hulk: Future Imperfect
The Golden Age
Tales of New Gods
JSA: Princes of Darkness
Spectre: Crisis Aftermath
Black Adam: The Dark Age
Our Worlds At War

There ya go! Maybe one of those will jump out at you? They ARE recommended by people who love DC comics so maybe you'll spot one that sound good. I hope so!
