How to talk like Lina Lamont in Singin in the Rain (without spraining your
Question Posted Thursday September 9 2010, 11:46 pm
I am a mezzosoprano, so I have a naturally low to medium-pitch voice. I auditioned for the role of Lina, and I figured out how to sound like her, but my throat hurts very bad after trying to "Lina-ize" my voice. The callbacks list will be posted on Saturday, and if I am on the list, I will probably need to "sing" What's Wrong With Me? and do some dialogue.
I don't want to lose my voice (I sing in choir a lot and musicals are my life), but I want to try out to play Lina since I can't dance very well. lol
Any tips to creating that nasally, high-pitched voice she has without spraining a vocal chord? Thanks!
If you're trying to alter your voice then it will take practice. Go slowly. Only practice for small periods of time. Let your vocal cords relax after.
During your practicing focus on your vocal cords and relaxing them. Relax your throat and let it open up. Try to not strain to get the notes out in the way you want. Focus on relaxing during the practice.
Nothing else is going to help. There isn't going to a magical way to do this. It takes time and a lot, lot, LOT of practice to get things like this down.
Don't overwork your throat, of course, but set aside so much time each day to do a little practicing. Make sure you start relaxed and relax well after. After awhile it should come semi-naturally.
If you have further questions then speak with someone more professional that you sing with. Maybe an instructor? They will be able to tell you how quickly this sort of thing can be done, but, unfortunately, I'd imagine it to take a few weeks to be able to sing an entire tune without harming yourself.
In the end it's better to not do a show so that you don't injure yourself. Skipping out on show could mean being able to pick up 10 in the future, if you get what I'm saying. Don't do something silly. Sometimes you have to pass up an opportunity because it's just in you best interest. Use your head. [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]
