Do Those Emergency Window Breaker Things Really Work? my dad gave me this thing as a keychain, and it has a light on one side, and a little spikey thing on the other, and he said that the spikey thing is for breaking a window underwater if you ever need it. like if you drive your car into water or something. the thing is actually really tiny..but could it really work? how hard would you have to hit the window with it? the tip looks like this...

Yes this item does work or can work. THose of us on Fire Department Rescue Squads carry a spring loaded version in the pocets of our turnouts tobreak car window with. We use them when we need to cut people out of cars that have been in traffic accidents. First we breakout all the glass then the Jaws of Life are used to get to the victims.
Your dad has the right idea here. Keep it handy in the glove box or conol. If it is not a spring loaded one put something with it to strike it with. ]
When your car goes underwater, the pressure outside the car is much higher than that inside the car. Pressure tends to try and equalize itself in situations like this, so the water is pushing on the windows of your car. When you use a small object like a pen or a screwdriver, or a special tool like this, you apply a little bit of stress to a localized point on the window. That weakens the glass and allows it to shatter under the pressure. ]
