I live in the country on a farm and just got a year old german shepherd dog and have had her for just oover a month. Although she is very bright she is also extremely energetic at times.
When i first got her she would always be either tied up with a chain or with us on a leash so she can get used to the place. (she is an outside dog) I would walk her around her boundary lines each day which is what was suggested to me as there is no fence around my yard. She has been off her chain but lately this passed week she will cross the road (especially if she sees a bird or another animal) to my neighbors house. This is NOT ok as we live on a fairly busy road. When we bring her back we chain her up and give her no treats for the rest of the day. But she will still do it the next day. What can i do? A fence or a shock is NOT an option.

It was the most devasting thing that ever happened to me. Especially since it was all my fault. When I got my next dog, I was extremely strict when she went outside. I had my dog for three years, and we hardly ever put a leash on her. My family thought she was well trained and would know not to run towards the street, but obviously not. When I got my new puppy this is what I do, whenever we go outside, she always has a leash on. When were in the front yard, she is only allowed so far in the yard. (never close to the street) when we go on walks, when I get to the point in my yard that she is not allowed to walk past, I pick her up and carry her till we are on the sidewalk. I know you can't do that, so mny just have her/him walk very close to you. If he goes towards the street (past the point you allow) scold him/her. But don't punish him/her after that, it won't understand. Also, when you tie him up outside, make sure you stay out there with him/her. So if he tries to chase birds or something you can scold him. That will prevent him from chasing animals and he will understand that males you upset. Dogs want to pleasE you. One time, my brother let the door open ad I was across the street, my dog ran right up to the point and stayed there and did not move until I got to the point where she was and I picked her up got the leash and brought her back out. Also, teach your dog commands like stay and come here. Maybe an obedience class is necessary for your dog? Do what you need to keep your dog safe. Oh and electric fences, don't have to cover your whole yard. It can be as small or big as you want, if cost is a problem. Just something to consider! Good luck and remember dogs learn fastly when you praise them! [ holahayley56's advice column | Ask holahayley56 A Question ]
