I forgot to take my pill one day, but I was only late by about 14 hours. I've been spotting for over 4 days now and it's really annoying. The weird thing for me is that when it's time to take the placebo pills, it usually takes about 2 days to get my period, not 14 hours. (I've been on it for almost a year now) Is this normal? If this has happened to anyone else, how long will it take to go away?? (I'm not having sex so I'm not worried about getting pregnant, I just want to know when this will be over)
Thanks!
There is usually nothing to be worried about if you're not currently sexually active since this is probably not an extremely early miscarriage.
Sometimes you will still ovulate while on the pill, hence the lack of 100% pregnancy safety when relying on it as birth control. Sometimes your body gets a little confused and can expel some blood.
Sometimes a little blood has gotten trapped and makes it way out of your body after your period is over. This usually happens fairly close to the end of your period though and the blood will not be a bright red color.
Many oral contraceptives thin out the uterine lining so sometimes it can bleed mid-cycle when your hormones (specifically estrogen) fluctuate a little (14 hours without your normal scheduled pill).
If you've recently masturbated (with or without objects) then it's possible you cut your vaginal walls just a little and caused a little bit of bleeding. Nothing to worry about as long as it stops relatively quickly.
If you are experiencing pain, the blood gets heavier or lasts more than two or three days, or something just does not seem right about the situation then see your doctor. It's better to be safe than sorry.
I read that about 80% of the women who experience breakthrough bleeding is caused by missing a birth control pill. This is, usually, nothing to worry about unless it happens more frequently. Cigarette smoking apparently increases the chances of breakthrough bleeding.
Some women also experience it because they get low on vitamin B while on oral contraceptives. It's wise to see you doctor if you suspect this so that you can discontinue the pills for awhile and take a b-complex supplement to get you body lined back out. A doctor can test you b vitamin levels and let you know if they have gotten too low.
Oh, and the reason it takes you 2 days to start is because you have weaned yourself off of the pill for the month relatively slowly. Each week has a different dosage of synthetic hormones. It takes your body a day or two to realize that the hormones have dropped enough to merit shedding the uterine lining. A rapid drop in those hormones makes your body notice it faster and takes immediate action. [ Peeps's advice column | Ask Peeps A Question ]
