so when talking to him, can i start to flirt but not do it right away? the normal casual talk but try to laugh and make jokes.

my friend said i should go back to the roots.

do what you want, but if he wanted the flirting relationship he would have come back already so your friend is wrong. you want to have a friendship with a bond, something he has never had before. he is guarding his heart and the only way you will get it is if he trusts you. flirting doesn't get you anything but flattery. i have had so many relationships i can honestly tell the outcome of pretty much all and what angle you need to take.
