To Splurge or Not to Splurge

Question Posted Sunday June 6 2010, 10:41 am

17/f

I found two pieces of jewelry and one pair of sunglasses that I'm in love with.

Heres the problem: They're extremely expensive, and I will be using my own money to make the purchase.

Prices:
Ring - $110
Watch - $110
Sunglasses - $275

I have the money (I have around $700), but I'm not sure that I want to spend $500 dollars of my money. I recently got a job, though, which is why I'm even considering it. The job starts in September, and I will definitely have the money back by November. Depending on how much I work (I have very flexible hours), I could have the money back by October. Also, the only things that my parents make me buy with my money are expensive jewelry, and electronics (ex. an ipod).

I'm definitely willing to spend up to $400 dollars, but its the $500 that's bothering me.

What would you guys do in my situation, and which ones would you buy if you didn't splurge and buy them all?

Thanks :)

Additional info, added Monday June 7 2010, 12:53 am:
Just some information on my family's financial situation. We are an upper-middle class family. My parents will be paying for college. Also, I've been thinking about this purchase for over month. I just wanted opinions before I made the purchase :) .

i would only buy one of the things you want at first. Then wait a couple months and buy another of the three. After a while you might change your mind about wanting them anyways.

i would most definitely not buy the sunglasses though because you can go out and find a really good pair of sunglasses for only 20 dollars that are just as good. just because they aren't name brand doesn't really make a difference. but that's just my opinion. half the time i cant even tell name brand from off brand.

In my opinion I would narrow it down to maybe one of the three things. that way you are getting something that you want, but you aren't spending so much money. in the long run you'll probably be happy if you didn't spend all that money at once. its alwasys a good idea to save money for things in the future, you never know what may come up.

well I don't really know your family's financial situation, but honestly when you get a job and have been working for at least a month or two, only then do you begin to realize what a dollar is really worth. (yes I realize that may sound corny) Have you had a job before this one?

Anyway, speaking as a broke college student (19/f) I wouldn't spend that kind of money so quickly. Wait a while. See if you still want the stuff in a week or two. I totally understand wanting to splurge and treat yourself to nice things for working hard, trust me. But $4-500 is a lot to spend on jewlery/nice sunglasses. If i were you and really wanted those things, I would first check outlet malls. They have great deals on expensive, name brand sunglasses. They usually sell sunglasses originally priced around 275 for about 100. You could also look at amazon and even ebay for better prices. You get the same product but for way less.
Same goes for the ring and watch. If they are nice, and high quality then maybe $110 is more reasonable. But still shop around. You might find something you like even better for less. Never just buy something that expensive on a whim. You'll wish you had that money back later.

Also consider saving a portion of your money. You'll definitely appreciate it later (I know I did). Especially if you plan on attending college.
