Am I being irresponsible for postponing my job search?
Question Posted Saturday April 17 2010, 12:20 am
I'm a 22 year old female with an associate's degree who is transferring to a 4-year college this coming fall. I quit my job in January because my boss was insane and I wanted to work in a different field of interest. I had another job all lined up, but that one didn't work out. I've been applying to various places since, and most of them haven't resulted in anything. The few that have either had schedule or locational issues (I don't function before 9am and for a while, I hated driving).
I saved up a decent amount of money while I was working, and I've been able to maintain the same bank balance thanks to a generous tax refund earlier this year. What I really want to do is stop looking for a while. I'm sick of the process, and if I can afford it, why shouldn't I? I mean, if I hear about a really great opportunity, I'll definitely jump at it, but I'm sick of worrying about my employment status and its relation to other people. What I mean is, I'm worried my boyfriend will think I'm lazy, but I'd really like to stop looking till about mid-summer. He and I are going away for a week, and I feel that if I bring that up at a job interview, potential employers will likely send me on my way. Once we're back, I'll definitely resume the search, but I would like to take a break for a little bit.
Basically, I'm battling feelings of guilt about the issue. I can afford to be unemployed for a few more months, but I don't want to be irresponsible. I guess I'm searching for some kind of validation. I live with my mom, so I don't have to worry about rent, and I used to take summers off when I worked during the school year.
So yeah, that's my situation. Thanks for listening.

So I think its a great idea to just take a break for a while, since you can afford it, and I think that once you go away for a week and have a chance to relax and regroup that you will feel much more confident about finding a job and that will show in your job interview and possibly help you to get a job quicker. Basically, its your life, you have to do what makes you happy, end of story and its not as if you are never ever going to search for a job again you simply want to take a break. Everyone deserves a break every now and then and I think its time for yours. Go have fun on your vacation then when you get back you can worry about everything else :)
