We usually are more nervous about taking the driver's test than it seems necessary once we've done it. I think if you feel like talking and you have something to say then by all means talk. You just don't want to talk too much, too loud or too fast where it becomes a distraction. As far as the radio I would not turn it on. You are taking a test and your instructor needs to be able to evaluate your driving skills.

Talking really depends on who your instructor is. I've had friends who talked to their instructor the whole time, while others didn't say a word. It really doesn't matter either way. I agree with the saying hello and everything, but your instructor is going to be grading you on your driving, not your communication skills.

As for the radio, I would keep it off. Your instructor will probably be giving you directions, so you'll want to make sure you can hear him or her and won't be distracted.

I wouldn't be too chatty, but don't be mute either. Stay focused on the road at all times, and if he asks you a question, answer obviously. Tell him good morning/afternoon, whatever. Other than that, wait until you're spoken to.

Don't turn on the radio unless he tells you to.
