I know this is probably the dumbest question ever but on St. Patrick's Day everybody drinks GREEN colored beer. Most people actually seem to call it green beer but I don't know the particular brand it might be. Anyway, my real question is actually WHY is it green? Other than this certain green beer served on St. Patrick's Day I've never seen a green colored alcoholic beverage. Is it just a brand of beer that adds green food coloring to their drink? Insight, please?
karenR answered Monday March 22 2010, 6:38 am: I did a little research and the true answer is probably that American bar owners can take a cheap beer, color it green and charge a higher price for it. Good for making a profit. They say a true Irishman wouldn't drink green beer, it is an American tradition.
I really like the idea that it could have come from this little tune though. :)
Jerome Holst, songwriter, states the following lyrics about green beer. ...
Now you may wonder how green beer
Got its fancy hue
Well once upon in Ireland
A leprechaun needed to
Relieve himself and so he pissed
Into a nearby stream
That just by chance was passing by
The local brewery...(magically delicious!) [ karenR's advice column | Ask karenR A Question ]
