why do ants come in my room?

Question Posted Friday March 5 2010, 8:20 pm

Ants keep coming into my room and there doesn't seem to be anything that I can do to get them to stop!

I don't even know what they want! They just seem to come in and wander around all over the place for no apparent reason whatsoever. I would understand if I had a box of chocolates melting inside my room somewhere, but I don't. There isn't really a trail of ants, they just seem to be everywhere!

Can somebody tell me why these ants are coming into my room? I don't really like harsh poisons so if there is anything fairly tame I can use to get rid of them I would appreciate it. Thank you for any help!

Ants show up alot in my house when there's a lot of sweet foods around - is there any sugar in the carpet, or crumbs in the window seal? Cleaning up food as soon as you can and hoovering regularly will stop there being a need for them to pay you a visit.

They do tend to come in the cracks at this time of year though - if there's a hole in the wall, or small gaps then get the filled in so there's no way in for the ants.

You can also get some powder or spray that will send them away (or kill them), but use this as a last resort if you don't want to kill them. It will help a lot though - you put it outside the house so you wont get dead bodies inside!

Hope they go soon x

Ants usually invade the home when they don't like the environment outside, or there is easier food inside for them to find, crumbs and stuff.

There are two ways to go about this. I could see that you are sensitive about the harsh chemicals, but I wasn't sure if it bother you to kill them or not. If you don't mind killing them, sprinkle some dry grits around and they will take them back to the hill and injest them, then they will get thirsty and "expand". It is a fairly easy and popular natural way to get rid of them outside at their source too. Go look for your ant hills, or you will get more visitors eventually.

The other option is to mess with their sense of smell, which is primarily how they get around and keep track of things. Cinnamon sprinkled (NOT Sugared cinnamon) is a greatly disliked smell for ants. They should turn around and look somewhere else.

Someone also mentioned sliced cucumbers at the areas that they come into the room. Haven't tried that one but it sound entertaining to watch.

I once moved into a new home and within hours there were ants falling on me from one spot in the ceiling, between two adjoined rooms. Made me crazy. I would sit with my vacuum and small children and we would hunt ants all day long. A little weird, but it kept us entertained.

Good luck, let me know what happens.
