switching birth control methods - 17/f

Question Posted Sunday January 24 2010, 8:11 pm

Last year, I started taking birth control (Ortho Tri Cycline). Since then, I've had an increase in headaches and moody swings and a decrease in my sex drive. I tried Yaz and it gave me the same symptoms. I want to switch to Nuvaring but I'm scared to ask my mom about it (she think's I'm on the pill for my period and Nuvaring just seems like it's only for birth control). I also don't know if Nuvaring decreases the effects the pill gives me (headaches, low sex drive, mood changes). Has anyone used Nuvaring? And how should I go about asking my mom to switch (without sounding like it's for sex?). Oh and is it expensive? Thanks.

I hate birth control. I hate being on it, I hate the way it makes me feel, and I wish I didn't have to take it. Unfortunately unless I want to be a mommy nine months from now, I don't have much of a choice.

I am taking YAZ right now, and I have been on it for about two years. Previous to that I was taking Ortho Cyclen. I switched because YAZ was supposed to be so much better and help with all those extra symptoms. When I first switched to the new pill it made me feel awful. I would get dizzy spells, I was always tired, and it made me constantly sick to my stomach. I was told this was normal though, so I pushed through it. After about the third pack the symptoms went away for the most part. I am not sure how long you were on YAZ, but if it was less than three months, that may be why you felt so bad. I feel fine now. I just hate the idea of being on any kind of hormonal birth control. I don't like that something else is regulating my body. I think it's creepy and seems unhealthy. But that's just a personal opinion.

You should try NuvaRing if you think you will like it better. It works in the same way as the pill (via hormones) except it's a vaginal insert instead of a pill, so I would assume it would help with your period as well. You should tell your mom you want to try NuvaRing, but are unsure if it will help with your period. You two should make an appointment with your gynocologist to see if it's right for you. I have added the link to the NuvaRing website below. It has tons of information about the pill. You should check it out.

Hey there. I have never used Nuvaring so I dont know from experience but I did look into it at one point so I know a little about it. All birth control works in the same basic way (meaning it will help with your period as well as other things) but it also affects everyone differently. The pill never helped me with my period but Ive had Mirena (another IUD form of birth control) for a year now and I have since only had my period twice, but unfortunately not everyone is that lucky. Anyway, my point is that Nuvaring can help with your period so you can definetly tell your mom that. You could also tell her that your sick of taking the pill everyday and sinse Nuvaring is a monthly task which is obviously easier and more pleasant, you would just like to look into it. That shouldnt make her suspicious at all. :)
The common side effects of Nuvaring are vaginal infections and irritation, vaginal secretion, headaches, weight gain and nausea. Mood change is also a side effect but less common. Remember though, it effects everyone differently.
As for costs... I wish I could tell you but I really dont know anything about it. There is a coupon on their website you can use though. Take a look at their website, it is really helpful and will answer tons of questions you may have.

I hope this helps. Good Luck. :)
