I don't know where you're living now, but I live in Los Angeles. The economy has hit LA hard. There are very little jobs and the cost of living is very high. You will not be able to survive on a In-n-out or Target job. I just moved back with my mother and have been searching for a job 2 months now. I went to an interview recently and was competing for a spot with 200 other people. The best resource is craigslist.org for apartments and jobs. If you have any connections in Los Angeles, hit them up.
If it were a different time, things would be so much better for you and your boyfriend. It's very hard right now for everyone. A lot of people are losing their jobs.
I was living in Marin County before I moved back to Los Angeles. It was easier to find a job there. Specifically in Corte Madera. That's in Northern California. It's a nice place to live. It's one of the richest counties in the United States. The cost of living was high, but you sound just like my friend. She's married now and living very well in Marin County. You might want to look into that. They have a lot of FREE public services.
