Mormonism is properly called The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The church was founded by Joseph Smith in the 1820s, supposedly after receiving a revelation and new Scripture from the Prophet Mormon.
Mormons do not drink caffeine or alcohol, and while they accept Christ as the Son of God and Redeemer of the World, they do not accept the Nicene Creed. They also believe that ordinary people can eventually attain divine status (Exaltation). They have a number of other beliefs that separate them from other Protestant denominations, enough that they are considered non-Christian by many Baptists and Pentecostals.
Mormons used to practice polygamy (some splinter groups still do) and used to exclude non-whites from the priesthood. They also do something called proxy or temple baptism, in which a dead person (non-Mormon) is rebaptized as a Mormon. The LDS Church attracted a lot of criticism for rebaptizing Adolf Hitler and Anne Frank, for example.
Wikipedia has a lot of articles on Mormonism; you can start with this one: [Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Bottom line: if religion is not a major issue between the two of you, don't make it one. His parents may not approve of you because you're not Mormon, but I don't think they'll be openly rude. (Just don't mention 'sacred underwear' to them.)
Hope this helps. ]
