meds cancels out birth contorl?

Question Posted Sunday September 20 2009, 3:21 pm

19female.

i'm on birth control, have been for about 3 yrs now. i was put on it by my doctor. well just about a yr ago i was put on a medication for my anxiety disorder. i've heard that medication basically cancels out your birth control. is this true? wouldn't you think my doctor would have told me this when she prescribed my medication, because she is the one i went to for both my bc and the medication.

You could always just ask your doctor. I doubt she did this on purpose. Asking a bunch of retarded teens on the internet isn't always the best idea.

Your medication can cancel it out. She may have not thought about it because doctors are notorious for prescribing medicine that is not supposed to be mixed on accident. call and ask or just google it, that may work too.

Your Doctor would have told you if it did.

And to my understanding, many psychotics, antianxiety and antidepressants don't cancel out birth control. I do know some antibiotics do.

For full assurance, I would call up your Doctor or Pharmacist. They'd tell you.

I would check with her again or ask another doctor. Doctors make mistakes, one doctor gave my grandmother a combination of medication that made her have Alzheimer-like symptoms, changed doctors and medications and she was back to normal. I'd definitely ask, I know antibiotics can cancel out birth control so its possible.
