freshman stress

Question Posted Monday September 14 2009, 10:32 pm

I'm so beyond overwhelmed with my college work. I have a difficult major that requires a lot of studio time to build models and projects. That alone could easily take up my time but then I have to take the core classes too which have nothing to do with my major. I'm so exhausted because I don't sleep much because I'm up late doing projects and papers. Everyday from the moment I wake up until the moment I fall asleep I'm doing work stopping only twice to eat. So thats from 8am-11pm everday, 6 days a week.

I don't know what to do. I'm on the edge of crying because I just can't take it and it's only September.

Hm you really took on too many classes at once then. That is a ridiculously crazy schedule.

First of all, find more times to snack on something to eat. Doesn't have to be a meal--some crackers or an apple in between one class and another is enough. You can't do things without energy and you don't get energy without food.

Second of all, I WOULD suggest dropping a class--but man oh man that looks terrible on your transcript. College semesters go by really really fast. The more you take on, the faster it goes, So yours should go by reallyyyyy fast. Just take some deep breaths and deal with what is put in front of you for now and next time don't take so many classes at once. Perhaps if you took all of your core classes first and studio things after that?

Third, Remember to prioritize. Do you really need to do this textbook reading tonight--or can it wait until the weekend? I know teachers always say to do certain things at certain times, but your health is more important. If the assignment isn't due the next day and it can wait a few more days or until the weekend, then let it be and deal with it when you have more time.

I can guarantee that once you get more into the swing of what needs more attention than other things, it will get easier. I hope things start going more smoothly for you.

If I were you, I would look into making you part-time rather than full-time. If the work is too much, I would suggest that and/or go see your advisor for tha major and he/she can help you.

College is nothing but hardwork and sleepless nights, but you should never be that overwhelmed to cry. 6 days a week is way too much. Is there any way to cut it down by a day or two?

I am sure you can take some route, you always can, you just need to find the right resources. If you don't know your advisor, I would contact someone in your major department about help.

Good luck and I am sure you will be okay. Just hang in there =]
