My fiance and I just bought a car from my parents for $3000... it was a fantastic deal, in perfect condition.
Depending on what age you are and what your driving record is, your insurance will be a huge cost. My fiance is 23 with 6 years of driving experience and a clean record. His insurance costs him $2200 per year... and that's a steal. The average quote we got was $3400 per year.
Gas and maintenance will cost you, too. Factor in at least $100 per month in gas, which isn't too bad. If you get a really cheap car, it may have problems with it. In that case, it can cost you way more in maintenance than you will save by buying a cheap car.
My suggestion; get an extra part-time job to save up for a good car. You'll need the extra money, too, to deal with the costs of running and owning it. [ NinjaNeer's advice column | Ask NinjaNeer A Question ]
