i read an article in Redbook magazine about 5 women who lost 100 pounds in 1 year--all by just switching their foods to a healthier alternative! as the women began to lose weight they were inspired to keep going which is that i believe will happen to your mom. on top of this the women lost the weight with little to no excersize and no diet pills were included. they did it through eating healthy and controlling their caloric intake. some kept a diary of everything they ate in order to look at just how many calories they were eating. and they didnt do anything super strict-they used portion control when it came to eating the more unhealthy things such as cake (one piece not three!) and icecream.
here is a list of the healthy alternatives to food
Bread=get whole wheat and whole grain instead of white
veggies=eat fresh not canned
fruits=same
milk=drink non fat or skim not whole (whole milk id like drinking butter!)
chocolate=eat dark chocolate-it has a load of antioxidants but dont overdue!
another chocolate alternative is Carub Chocolate-its one of the healthiest kinds!
when it comes to cereals=dont get the sugary ones-instead eat cereals with at least 8 grams of fiber and whole grains to keep fuller longer-i recommend Kashi fiber cereals
icecream= get non fat sorbets or non fat froxen yogurts or even frozen bananas/strawberries dipped in dark chocolate! yum!
meats=stay lean. get low sodium meats from the deli and grilled chicken instead of fried. also sticl to good cooked steaks like filet minon not fried.
nuts= stay with almonds and non salted nuts-small handfuls-they pack calories!
yogurt-try Greek yogurt-its thicker with lots more antioxidants and fiber!
avacados are a good source of healthy fats
for drinks stick to water and green tea-proven to help you lose weight. NO SODA or other carbonated sugar drinks-even vitamn water! check the calories! and keep coffee simple- it burns calories and speeds metabolism but not when u add a bunvh of cream and sugar!
in general stay away from everything fried, refined sugars and non healthy fats
for small excersize maybe go on walks like walk the dog or hoolahoop! its funny but yeah! also tell your mom to relax and de-stress herself on a daily basis-stress leads to weight gain and unhealthy eating habits
Michele answered Sunday August 9 2009, 5:52 pm: There is this great book out called the fat to muscle diet, it is old, and in paperback. You can probably find it on amazon for a $1.00 or so. In it is excellent advice about nutrition and many recipies. Basically, in order to loose weight and get healthy, your meals should be well balanced. Yours and your mom's I mean. There should be some protein, carb, vegetables, fruit and fat in each meal. Protein being most important because that will "stick with you" and keep you from getting hungry between meals. Proteins are eggs, meat, chicken fish, stuff like that. You can get protein from vegetables and legumes like beans, soy, hemp powder and whey poweder, a dairy product.) A woman should eat at least 6 oz of protein per meal. About the size of a deck of cards. (chicken, meat, fish) one small serving of a carb like rice or potato, and as much vegatables as you like, two cups is even ok, and if still hungry, some fruit, and for a fat, you could use the salad dressing, or saute (fry) the veggies in some olive oil. Use as much spices as you like for flavor. AVOID fried foods, processes foods, baked goods, candy, and especially soda. Drink water, lots of water.
Then get your mom some "dancin to the oldies videos by Richard Simmons. He has helped many many very very overweight women find the courage they need to keep moving. Any kind of movement, even waving her arms, for a woman your mothers size, is an improvement. Anything. Just spend 30 minitues a day doing it, and I guarantee, it gets easier every day. she can work out at home in front of the TV with a DVD. there are lots of them, and some are easier than others. I really like DanceXFitness with Kenn Kihiu, but your mom is not ready for that just yet. In time though, I highly recommend it.
You are a great kid for being so concerned and wanting to help. She does need your help. Don't give up. You can both accomplish this. Encouragement works best.
Good luck to both of you. [ Michele's advice column | Ask Michele A Question ]
