I Suck At German! Dropping German at end of the year. Can i do drama in a year and where?
Question Posted Sunday June 28 2009, 9:52 pm
basically im shit at german. don't try and tell me to keep trying it, cos i have been for four years and i still don't know the basics. its kinda holding me back and i go to a private school where everyone is annoyingly smart and its worrying me about dropping a subject, so i thought i would do a drama gcse out of school because i always wanted to do drama but i couldn't. could anyone, teachers or students tell me if they or someone they know had an experience either doing drama gcse out of school and/ or starting late because its summer term yeart ten, and my stupid school only told me now that i could drop out of it and do somthing out of school, and i don't mind working my arse off during the holidays to scrape a decent grade in drama and i don't mind working during my AS levels, because i will do drama then so i can manage it. i just need to know how hard it is and where in london i can find a place or how they found someone to teach, or even if it was homeschooling, cos i can do it i am sure, but i also need to apple and stuff. sorry this was long, but i need the advice!!! i am very desperate to get good marks!
It's harder than GERMAN!
There's a lot more to it than just acting. There is a LOT of coursework that you have to do. And a lot of that coursework BEGINS at the start of year 10 - and that is based on a play you went to see as class and special workshops you've done in class - you write about your thoughts, opinions - what someoen's actions might mean to society - Since you werent apart of the class - experiencing the workshop and learning how people#s actions are reflected by social class, media etc - you can't do drama! You can't do the coursework because you never experienced the ride.
You cannot be away for Drama. You need to be there - everything you learn goes towards your coursework. You pick up skills all the time which you need for your final year 11 performance.
You can't do drama by homeschooling! Drama you have to have a class - and each of you depend on eachother for a grade - it is true. If one of you is away - you can't do the work - and by work I mean your play that you want to do at the end of year 11. Also you are marked as a group for your drama Gcse in year 11 - so if one of you is ill on the day, or one of you is complety shit at drama - your grade goes DOWN.And that isnt easy as pie. You neeeded to be there in year 10 to learn the creative skills ie - in the play you need to communicate a dramatic intention to your audience and need a directors vision. You need to know how do this and this would by replacing text with other dramatic forms ie - sound collages, mime, music, movement, conscience alley.
Honesty, its too much to do in one year, really.
If I was you, if you want to drama because you've always wanted to do it - take in year 12 - because you dont have to have the year 10 and 11 expeirence - they welcome everybody.
At school, if you can, drop german. If they say you need to take another option I would suggest something like digital photography - which doesnt involve coursework or cooking.
Drama is very difficult. You really needed to be there in year 10. And every year at my school the current year 11's would tell the years below not to take it because it's so difficult - and takes up so much of your time (ie practising after school, staying up to do courseowrk, i remember I had to stay up till 2 to do it, no exaggerartions)
and the years below wouldnt listen. I was one of those who didnt listen. And now I am telling you the same thing - drama is one of the most diffiulct subjects and it annoys me when people think its just acting - because infact you do more writing and sitting around and discussing than acting to be fair. If you are allowed to do it - just remember what you are getting yourself into. I don't mean to make drama sound like death, but noone ever listens when you tell them - its only at the end of the year they realised you were right.
I did French GCSE'S to I can relate - because I was straight D's whist doing drama. And even thought my grades were so bad in french, drama was harder.
If want anymore insight, inbox me. Everything i have said is just true honesty. Good luck
