hypochondriac!

Question Posted Thursday May 21 2009, 9:52 pm

I'm 19/F and for the past few years, I have been showing signs of being a hypochondriac. Any little thing that goes wrong with me (headache, cut, stomachache, etc) I assume it's the beginning of or a symptom of something life threatening. I stay up all night scared I won't wake up the next morning! How can I get over this? I'm sick of making the small things big, but I'm also incredibly scared of catching a disease or dying. It's a huge, unrelenting fear that affects me every single day.

You have health anxiety, i've started to feel like this too, the only advice i would be able to suggest is join [Link](Mouse over link to see full location) it's for people with panic and anxiety, there's a section on the forum called Health Anxiety which has been a god send to me and many others.
If your scared you tell people your symptoms and how your feeling and then the others will give you advice and 9 times out of 10 there will be people who have the exact same symtptoms, it's a real comfort :-)

I gotta warn you I wrote a lot...cause I deal with the same thing...

Man I agree with the last person (littlegirlblues) I know what you are going through. I have it too. It used to be REALLY BAD. It's gotten better though. I might do psychotherapy one day. hahaha The thing that has worked for me has been meditation. Meditating on allowing the mind to flow without having any emotional attachment to the thoughts and Meditating on keeping the mind clear. They are just delusions and the only difference between you and I and others, is that we sometimes let the immagination get the better of us. You probably witnessed something when you were really young that got you really scared and it just grew and grew and grew until you are at the point you are at now. In fact I can remember the first thing I ever saw that gave me the feelings I have sometimes. It will be good for you to try to find that old feeling and heal that part of you. Also let go of the body vigelance. Stop looking at it over and over and over, checking it over and over. Just Stop! Say "That's body vigilace and I release it now!" Get dirty! That has been a good help for me, my boyfriend doesn't wash his hands sometimes, it freaks me out, but I started doing it too. Not with everything, but with some things. Only read about health when you can. Focus on healthy people and how you feel when you are health and the fact that you are healthy now. Do those work books at Borders on OCD and Hypochondria. Those are really helpful. Talk your self out of the fear...The best thing I started doing (aside from meditation) Sleeping with soothing music CD/DVD/Theradio.com, or something like that on! Man that helps. It keeps your mind calm DO NOT GO TO SLEEP WITH THE RADIO OR TV ON! If you do that you will hear the commercials and dream about stuff that has nothing to do with you, it's just what you are picking up off the tv...so if they are talking about sickness you are going to dream about it. Drink herbal teas like Catnip, Rosemary, Mugworth (if you are not taking any medications, if so make sure they won't react) Sleepy time tea. Stuff with no caffine, it will help calm your mind. Get Busy, do stuff that keeps your mind focused on positive things... Art work, writing, giving adive on this column, reading, stuff like that. Watch your posture...I am sitting like it now...:P bad posture makes your body feel funny and you get feelings that can start to make you paranoid. Positive Affirmations. Look in the mirror and say I have a clear and positive mind, I am at peace with my creative thoughts, I love my thoughts bad and good true and untrue. I allow them to flow. I know the truth for I feel it inside of me. I think positive things, My mind is relaxed. Things like this. Eat less sugar and if you want dark chocolate. White sugars increases depression...Dark chocolate is a stress reliever. If you do happen to do some drugs like a little mary J or something like that, make sure you are in a controlled enviornment with people you trust. Preferably at home so if you need too you can take a shower to bring you back to earth. DO NOT WATCH TV AND COMMERCIALS WHEN YOU ARE HIGH...i'm not saying you get high, i don't knwo but if you do...take my advice...The best thing to do ALL AROUOND is to totally mute the commercials when you are watching TV or listening to the radio...There are so many ads on sickness you wont believe when you start to pay attention. Just keep your mind focused on good stuff :) that's all. Hope it wasn't too long, but it's pretty much everything I've done to get my self a lot calmer than i used to be OOOOOOOOOH BEFORE I FORGET! If you have the money...invest in Lucinda Basset's Videos on dealing with being a "What If Person" Also these vitamins are good to take:
Vitamin B6, B12, Folic Acid, Vitamin D, Vitamin A I think all of these are good for calming down the nerves and eat cellary, it is good for calming down the nerves! You will see big differences if you do this stuff.
Peace and Peaceful mind :) hit me up anytime!

I'm taking a psychology class right now, and I've studied about hypochondriacs. The best kind of treatment there is, is psychotherapy. You should see a psychologists. They will really help you and your problem. It's best that you go with your family, since they will help you get through it. I'm pretty sure that if it's severe, the psychologist would give you some tips you can do. There's really no medication and no advice anyone can give you so that feeling would go away. You just have to go see a psychologist.
