Packaged food, obviously, has expiration dates. You can tell when fruits and vegetables have gone bad just by looking at/smelling them. If you mean leftovers, it all depends on what's in them. If there's a substantial amount of dairy, you should only give it a few days.
I just tried to think of another example and failed because basically all the leftovers I can think of have dairy.. Anyway, I'm a fan of the sniff test. If it smells unusual, abnormal, or disgusting, toss it. If you aren't sure, it's probably just safer to leave it alone. [ littlemisschatterbox's advice column | Ask littlemisschatterbox A Question ]
One of my friends takes a foods class in school and they told her about four days.
Otherwise, go with your instincts. If it doesn't smell quite right, or looks funny, throw it out. It's not worth risking food poisoning to save a little money.
Labeling food containers with the date you made something will help you remember too. There are labels made for this specific purpose, or you can just buy some cheap white labels at an office supply store.
If you make large batches of food (and are therefore throwing things away a lot) do what my family does: buy some individually-sized tupperware containers, and freeze portions of meals. They can last for weeks and taste almost as fresh as when you made it =]
