what is a virus guard?

Question Posted Thursday May 7 2009, 12:53 am

in your antivirus review some products have a "virus guard". what is this? also, how do they stock up for adware/malware detection? it looks like you did the comparison in 2007. have you looked into it since?

thanks!

A "virus guard" is the element of some antivirus software which scans files as they are being accessed. If you have a virus guard, your antivirus will stop you from running/downloading/copying viruses. Without an antivirus guard you must manually scan your computer occasionally, and you must be extra careful not to run any viruses.

Avast and BitDefender are best at detecting general malware out of the ones I tested. Antivir and AVG are specifically designed *not* to detect malware, so that you'll buy the paid version.

I am interested in updating my antivirus comparison, but I'm not happy with the number of virus samples I have right now. Please send viruses, malware, and files that antivirus programs falsely identify as malware/viruses to me.
