It's when companies recruit a bunch of people to try or discuss a product (this ranges from taste testing sodas and drinks to video game testing to just sitting in a room talking about specific cars) and give opinions. It helps the companies get a better idea of what people think of their product.
These meetings range from 1-4 hours depending on the task. Sometimes you might have to do it a couple days in a row. Then at the end of it, they'll pay you.
I've done focus groups on video games and energy drinks from my experience. They're fun and easy money.
To get a better idea, you should check out FindFocusGroups.com and look at their focus group ads. They have it organized by city and state. I check it pretty much every day.
