Never shave it. It won't grow back DARKER, regardless of what is said because that's a fallicy, but the angle at which it'll be hit by the light will make it appear darker and the blunt edge cut by the razor will cause it to appear thicker.

Yeah, girls can have side burns. And if it's just hair on the side of your face - it doesn't really have a name.
The number one thing you can do if you have hair on the side of your face/side burns is to bleach it. You can get the kit from Wal-mart or some pharmacy. That way it won't be so obvious that you have hair on your face.
If you have really dark hair that is coarse & people can notice - you can wax it. Know though, that if you start waxing it - you'll have to keep at it. And that means you'll have to do it atleast once a month. But after waxing for a while, your hair will get thinner and may eventually stop growing!
And your right! Don't shave it, because it can grow back darker and thicker.
Last but not least you could go about laser hair removal. It may be something worth saving up for if your side burns/hair on your face is really bad!
