It is the long term effects of tanning, whether it's artificial OR natural, that causes cancer. It's the burning of the skin, over and over, that's the problem. That's the only reasonable discussion I can think of that you could bring to your mom.
The only other solution would be to spend 3 hours a day outside until the prom. That will definitely give you some color. I know because I spend 3 hrs. a day, everyday, outside riding horses and I always have color. If mom says "no" to the tanning bed, then go outside and rake leaves, take a walk, ride a bike....do your homework outside! Anything, just get out there. I'm sure you have heard all of the negative effects of normal tanning, so I won't get into it, because that's not what you asked for. Your mother probably understands this, and (yes, I know you DON'T want to hear this) and is the reason that she won't let you. She just wants what's best for you.
But I do understand what you mean. In some cases, a darker complexion compliments a prom dress nicely. In others, not so much.
A girl I knew in high school comes to mind. She was addicted to it. There was actually a Facebook group formed entitled "KEEP (NAME) AWAY FROM THE TANNING BEDS". It just didn't suit her, and quite frankly it was the stuff that sitcoms are made of.
Not that I believe you will become addicted to it. But don't rule it out.
The best I can give you is to work on an incentive option. If you can prove to your mother that you will work for it, and can handle it responsibly (and not wind up like my old friend leather-face...) then you will have a better shot. Feeding her a line will not help, and might not have the desired effect.
But anyway, I hope this helped a little. I'm not one to stop you from trying something new. Maybe one day you will come to appreciate what nature gave you. :) [ Neener's advice column | Ask Neener A Question ]
