Okay, so someone i know has an Tooth abscess/ wisdom tooth and it hurts like hell. he's had it for like 1 month now and painkillers just arent working well. He was told that he now has to wait another 12 months to get it fixed, due to some waiting list(which is stupidddd). Is there ANY way he can get rid of the pain? Im worried he's going to end up overdosing, and the doctors/hospital said theres nothin they can do for 12 months, except give him painkillers. Any suggestions??
Additional info, added Monday February 16 2009, 3:05 am: Also, he cant go to the dentist because the roots are really close to some nerves and some bone they have to put him under anaesthetic so yeh dentist is a no-go.. DzeeAnn answered Monday February 23 2009, 4:03 pm: Depending on where you live, there should be an emergency number to contact to get in to see a dentist for an emergency. Call your local health care center for the number. I have 2 of my boys (grown men) who were in the same situation and both worked out of town. When they came home, they called the emergency number and got in within 2 hours. They had to take antibiotics for a week first to get rid of the infection, then the following week they had their tooth removed. This abcess needs to be treated with antibiotics right away. If you don't have such a number to call go back either to the hospital emergency or walk in clinics and demand treatment. This infection could get much worst. I am not saying to be bold or anything, but politely demand to be treated for the abcess with antibiotics.I hope this helps. Good luck! [ DzeeAnn's advice column | Ask DzeeAnn A Question ]

Sleep on extra pillows because laying down puts extra pressure on the area, and if possible they will need some antibiotics to clear up the infection. It is not a good idea to let an abscess grow because it can cause further problems with breathing if the swelling causes the throat to close. An abscess should ideally be dealt with at the beginning of the infection and should certainly not be left for several weeks or months. I suggest getting a second opinion from an emergency dentist or hospital a&e. [ Elcee's advice column | Ask Elcee A Question ]
