Preg & Bleeding after pap smear

Question Posted Friday January 23 2009, 10:07 pm

I will be 37 weeks pregnant tomorrow. When I had a pap smear today I started bleeding. So my doctor told me to keep an eye on it and if its like a regular period call the doctors office. Well here it is about 8 hrs later and I'm having quite a bit of having brown bleeding. Should I call, go to the hospital or what? Thanks

As long as it stays a brownish red color then you shouldn't be too concerned. If you want reassurance, then I'd definately get it checked out. Good Luck!

Brown bleeding is nothing to worry about. Your cervix is sensitive at this point in pregnancy, and a pap smear can really irritate it. You only need to worry if you are having bright red bleeding. I just had my 3rd baby in december. I had some bright red bleeding at 37 weeks, then my water broke and was full of blood. I had a placental abruption. Bright red bleeding can be that or placenta previa. Brown blood is just from small irritation, I would wait it out and call your doctor if it all of a sudden gets really really bad, or if you wait a day and its not going away. Just remember at this point your mucous plug can come out and that can cause bleeding also.

If the blood is a brown color it usually isn't anything to worry about. However, do you really want to take a chance that something could possibly be wrong? My advice...go to the emergency room and get it checked.
