I have already applied to ECE but now I am thinking about social youth worker. i am confused. I want a career where I can work with and help children. I cannot go to university because I did not take academic courses in highschool. Social youth worker pays a little more but I can only really advance if I go to unversity right? Where as ECE I can maybe one day own my own business or advance in someone elses business with only a diploma. Working for the government would also be good. Where can I work for the government with a ece diploma? What can I do. Please help, what do you think are the pros and cons with each career?
I am neither an ECE or youth social worker; however, I highly recommend you speak with people of both professions to get an idea of what they like and dislike about their job.
In addition, ask a school counselor about occupations within each field. If you specify that you'd like to work with the government or your own business I'm sure they can give very good suggestions.
Advicenators is a pretty young crowd actually. Most users aren't even thinking this far ahead in life yet, which is pretty sad. I would love for you to come back to this question when you, yourself, find out the answer and click "Answer this Question" and answer it as if you were another user. This would help many other Advicenators as they mature and deal with this issue.
I apologize for not having the answers other than to seek out someone that is a professional of said fields. I'm sure they'd love talking about the pros and cons of each occupation and what they wish they would have done differently. There are a lot of factors that are involved in such informative answers that you pretty much have to be BE that person before you KNOW it.
Just take a few weekends and get with some people that could help :) Start with your counselor if you need to. I'd guess that you could go to ANY college and speak to a counselor about this--even if you didn't plan on actually going to college at their specific school. Just walk in and ask questions left and right and expect their best answers they can give. It wouldn't hurt to visit a few campuses about the same question even!
