High School Journalism... II? Hey, I'm the girl who asked about the schoo newspaper (obviously). Thanks for your input, but the thing is, the whole for-the-students-so-ask-the-students thing is what we've BEEN trying to do. I know they MUST have strong opinions on something, but the most we get from ANYONE (and yes, we ask different cliques or whatever) is "um.. I don't know, I can't think of anything..." or they say stuff like, "Well, I don't understand guys/girls..." or "The cafeteria food sucks..." All that's been DONE. I was hoping maybe you have any other suggestions? Maybe something you've featured on YOUR school newspaper before, or any kind of ideas YOU may have? (After all, you may not go to my school, but you still count as who we're aiming at-- teenagers.)

my paper does different things. we do global stuff that effects us: economy, politics (which, yes, we are tired of, too), culture, missions. we do reviews on books, movies, music, concerts and video games (big hits with our readers, btw). we do A LOT of editorials, they're on everything from big lawsuits all over the country to like "why do we have to wear school ids?" uummm...we're doing a lot more features. we just recently did a job package, we're doing a Thanksgiving package, stuff like "expressions" are always good (we did tattoos once, local music, plays at your school). you could also get on issues at your school, like violence. we've done immigration (HUGE issue at my school) and the dropout rate(also HUGE). those are some ideas.
some other ways to get people to contribute though?? ALWAYS BE A JOURNALIST. when talking to friends, hearing class discussions, eavesdropping....get ideas. what are the issues, what are they excited about, what are they interested in? don't ask people directly what they would like to see anymore, ask what they're doing after school, on weekends, on breaks. what can be better at school? what is awesome? what do you feel strongly about. it's like interviewing. you can't just say "tell me about this." you have to keep asking questions.
encourage letters to the editor also. :)
if you need anything else, you can ask. i love journalism. it's just my thing. i'd be happy to answer. ]
