15k (kilobytes) is the amount of data in your picture, not its physical size. There are more 1s and 0s in your picture than Advicenators wants to store. Most likely your picture is an uncompressed format like BMP, which stores data very inefficiently. MS paint saves only in BMP format, for example.
You can use images with any amount of data if you first upload the picture to a service such as:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Just put the "direct image URL" given to you from those sites in the "URL of a picture of you" section of "profile settings". Make sure you use just the URL, not any HTML. You should not put any angle brackets (<>) in your Profile Settings, as it won't work and it could mess up that page.
Alternatively, you can make your image use less data by converting it to a different format. To do so, download and install Irfanview:
[Link](Mouse over link to see full location)
Open your image in Irfanview. Go to file -> save as. You can change the format in the second dropdown box. If your image is a picture of real things (from a camera), save in the "JPG - JPG/JPEG Format". If your image is anything else, save it in the "PNG - Portable Network Graphics" format. Unless your image is huge in dimensions or extremely complex, either of these formats will surely shrink it to below 15KB, without too much loss in quality. ]
Go to tinypic.com and upload the photo of your choice there. I usually pick the size option that is for websites. (I think...)
Anyhow, after the picture is uploaded, select the choice of seeing the actual photo size to insure it looks shrunk enough to go on your column.
