Question Posted Thursday October 16 2008, 5:36 pm

I'm going to get a duschund in a few weeks a & was thinking about breeding her I needed to know how many puppies she will have & how long should I wait to breed her. Also I have wanted to know when I'm looking for a mate for her, what should I look for.
Thank You for your time,
Olivia

It's hard to say how many puppies a daschund will have. There can be as few as 5 or so. While working at an emergency vet clinic, I once saw an emergency c-section on a daschund that had 11 puppies. This dog was very sick because of the amount of puppies that she had.

You should wait until at least their second heat cycle, until she is old enough to handle a litter. Work with your vet on any specific questions about keeping her healthy during the pregnancy. If your vet doesn't specialize in reproduction, it would be best if you found a new vet who does.

As for looking for a stud for her, you should look for the same things as you look for when choosing a bitch that you want to breed. Both dogs should be healthy with good temperaments. This means that you need to find out what their parents (and grandparents) were like. The purpose of breeding is to breed the "perfect" dog, not to continue breeding dogs that could give their puppies inhearitable diseases or aggression/anxiety issues.

Like I said, work with your vet with this and you should be fine.
