I think I have Bulimia, but I'm not sure..

Question Posted Monday October 6 2008, 2:36 am

Hi, um i have been making myself throw up quite a lot after meals lately. I dont binge, but i do throw up after nearly everything i eat. Im normal weight for my age, (15-female-58kg-163cm tall) but I cant help thinking that all my friends are WAY more skinny and beautiful than i am.. I just want to be like them..
I need to lose weight. I want to be skinny too. Noone really understands why i want to be skinnier though. This is the only way thats even had a small chance of helping me lose weight though, so..
I havent been doing it for very long, only about 3 weeks and only about 2 or 3 days a week.
What should I do?

no offense to the person who said youre faking it, but dont rush to that conclusion. you said youre not sure if you have this disorder or not, hence asking for advice. I would say you are in the early stage of bulimia, in which stage it can be controlled and stopped far easier than if you wait a year or so. Im going through this too, well.. except its been since the summer b4 7th grade [im a sophomore now] I dont binge either, but i wont let myself take in more than 200 calories if that a day. and i still throw them up. pleasee ask someone you trust for help, its easier than you think.

I have been in the exact same situation and am still in it trying to over come it. Please try and get help from a guidance counselor at school, a friend, trusted adult, parent, etc. You really do not want this to get worse, trying to lose weight this way doesn't even work. take it from someone who has been like this for 2 years, i'm still the same weight. so honestly throwing up is not the answer.

purging is not the only way you can lose weight either. if you want to lose weight try excercising and eating healthier foods, drink a lot of water. Even though i don't know you i wouldn't want ANYONE going down this path.

Please stop this and get help!

This is where I get to tell you what I think of your situation... But I won't.
Instead I think you need to grow up a little bit because if you, in fact, had some actual form of eating disorder you probably wouldn't suspect it.
If you want to be skinnier then cut what you eat in a day in half and start walking, running, etc. Making yourself vomit only deteriorates the lining in your esophagus, gives you awful breath and messes up your teeth. You'll be thin and sickly with bad teeth that no one will love. You'll, in essence, look like a meth addict, and no one loves meth addicts.
Find a healthy way to be sickly thin if you want to, but all this really SOUNDS like is that you want some attention and you're checking to see if you're faking bulimia correctly.

Bulimia is where you purge then vomit.
Most people think anorexia is where you just don't eat (it goes deeper than that...), but there is a form of anorexia called "purging anorexia".
When I was in about 4th or 5th grade, I began showing symptoms of anorexia, and by the time I reached 6th grade I had already been diagnosed. I was diagnosed with the "restricting" form of anorexia. I ate very, very little. Much fewer than 1000 calories per day, probably fewer than 500.
So take it from someone who knows, you're in a very dangerous position. It took until I was almost hospitalized for me to realize how out of control I had become.

Here's a really good site that goes into detail about anorexia. You may not think you're anorexic because anorexia isn't just about not eating or purging, it's a mental disorder where you physically see yourself as overweight and where you have an obsession with becoming thin (which it seems you are already developing that obsession, even if you don't SEE yourself as fat, yet). My advice to you is to GET HELP! Speak with a school guidance councilor, a teacher you can trust, a friend you can trust, a friends parent, your parent, etc. You NEED to let an ADULT know so they can go about this the proper way.
If you feel more comfortable talking to a friend, do that. Any true friend would WANT to keep your secret but KNOW that the only way to help you would be to tell on you so you can get helped and get better.
If you're a movie person, try and find "For The Love of Nancy" starring Tracey (sp?) Gold. It's a really good movie & shows you a lot more about eating disorders than most people realize.

If you have any questions about anorexia, let me know. I've been there & I'm a survivor of anorexia, so I can help you. But please, get help before it's too late. People die from this more often than we think; you need to seek help!!

(If you truly don't believe it's anorexia, you may have an EDNOS... Eating Disorder Not Otherwise Specified)

"There is compensatory behavior (purging, laxative use, excessive exercise, or other behaviors) after eating small amounts of food; i.e., there is no binging"

Please, get help!!
