My neighbor's Labrador Retriever just had a litter of Labrador Retriever puppies and she wants to have the puppies microchipped but doesn't know when she should have it done. I've heard a few people tell me the right time is when the dog gets spayed or neutered, but the breeder I got one of my Great Danes from had the puppy microchipped before I even bought her (at about 10 weeks old). I was thinking that maybe it was based on breed side and this is why it differed. Does anyone know when the ideal time to get a dog microchipped is?

MAK answered Tuesday September 23 2008, 3:52 pm: There really is no ideal time. I work at a veterinary hospital and we typically do it during the spay/neuter because it is less stressful for the animal. The needle is HUGE and often leaves a little hole for the microchip to fall back out, so its best to do it while they are asleep and will be sleepy for the rest of the day so the chances of it falling out are minimized. Also, it is pretty painful, so the pain injection/pain meds that we give for the surgery before/after the surgery help with the pain of the microchip as well.
To get them micro chipped at a super young age is also okay, but not suggested because their immune systems aren't as built up as an older puppy's. A good rule of thumb to go by is if they are weaned and had all of their vaccines, it should be okay.
