greater than sum of parts can someone help explain this concept to me? how can something be greater than the sum of its parts?

I agree with the answer below. Basically its whenever two or more things complement one another, such that the results of them working together is higher than the results obtained when they work separately.
In business we have the stuff drilled into our brains lol (the word they keep flinging around is synergy... which basically means the same). Business units working together (e.g. departments) should produce synergy. When engaging in mergers & acquisitions you might also seek a partner that, when united with your resources, will produce an outcome more favourable than the two of you working separately. ]
This statement generally applies to some teamwork principle. For example, for a team to function, they have to act like a team. When you have a team full of people where everybody wants to go off and do their own thing and be selfish, that doesn't work.
So that means that when you have a bunch of random people who only think about themselves, that isn't as cool as having a team who functions as one.
The statement isn't literal, it's just talking about how working together is better than lots of people working alone. ]
