is my dvd rom drive damaged by doing something wrong.

i dont know why all of the sudden my dvd rom drive on my computer will not play any types of cds when i put them on. this is what happens. i put the cd on there and it sounds like its working. then the green light near the eject button just shuts off. why does it do that.is it damaged. i really dont want to buy a new one if there is something that could fix them. the play cd/dvd option is not showing on my windows media player or real player. thank you.
