Windows Media Player

Question Posted Thursday September 18 2008, 8:25 am

Hi there,

I saw that you gave some good advice about Windows Media Player and so I was wondering as to whether you could help me. I use Vista Basic on a Dell Laptop

Recently, my Windows Media Player has been non-responsive, like whenever I double click on the icon, nothing happens: literally, there's no warning sound/message to tell me that something is wrong. I can't open it, I can't update it etc and it is really annoying.

Now, I've talked to Dell about it and they say to restore the laptop to factory settings, which would mean wiping out everything which was on the laptop and I really don't want to run the risk of losing all my work, pictures, programs because then I'd have to re-install them, try and get files of the backup and hope that they work again.

I was wondering whether there was something else which I could do to try and make it work. By the way, I did a system restore and went back like five days and it worked fine again, but then 'time caught up' with the computer and then it stopped working again.

Thanks

Try the system restore again. The second failure could have just been a coincidence.

If that doesn't work, try following my guide here:

Also make sure that you've installed all available updates for Windows Vista. If you haven't installed it already, SP1 will probably fix this.

If you only use Windows Media Player for playing audio and video, then you could use an alternative. I personally use Media Player Classic Homecinema:

VLC is also good:

There are other things that could fix your problem, but I would need realtime info. Contact me by IM if nothing I said works and you don't want to use an alternative.
