Hotmail Ads Slowing My Computer Down

Question Posted Tuesday September 16 2008, 1:02 pm

I use Windows Live Hotmail and it takes me forever just to read my messages because of the ads at the top of each page. Of course, everytime I go to a page (my inbox, etc.) the ad at the top has to load, it takes probaby a full minute or longer just to load it. Is there anything I can do to speed this up?

By the way, I do not have any spyware, viruses, etc. on my computer, I've checked a good number of times.

Get a faster Internet connection. Your connection has to be pretty slow for there to be that much slowdown from ads.

For Firefox you can use Adblock Plus and Easylist to block all ads:

For IE7, you can use IE7Pro to block all ads:

Ad Muncher (not free) will block all ads in most browsers:

Modifying the hosts file to block advertising will work in all browsers, but it can cause problems. Here is a good hosts blacklist:

If you just want to block ads on Live Hotmail, you can use most of the options above to block anything from ad*.msn.com. You could also use privoxy for this, which is a very small application:

Privoxy is difficult to set up, though.
