What is your suggestion for a good Japanese anime to watch?

Question Posted Friday August 29 2008, 9:38 am

I'm just one of those crazy anime girls. I've watched a lot of Japanese anime in my time. I have a few favorites (like Midori no Hibi, Naruto, Bleach, and even Dragon Ball Z) but am still looking for new anime to check out. I know I can buy anime on ebay (and watch some animes on YouTube) and other various sites but I need some good anime suggestions.

What is your favorite Japanese Anime? Could you tell me a little about the anime to see if it catches my interest?

Even if it's a very popular anime it's alright to suggest it. Like I said, I'm one of those crazy anime girls so I even like to hear other people just say which animes they prefer and why. I could talk about anime all day long!

As previously suggested, Death Note is effing AMAZING. Its not action oriented, rather its all mindgames and people outsmarting each other.

Ones you should definitely look into.

*Note: Some of these will be marked as subbed only, these suck in english, and getting the japanese with good Subs is almost a requirement to enjoy it*

Cowboy Bebop
Outlaw Star
Dai-Guard (Subbed only)
Original DragonBall
Trigun
One Piece
Rurouni Kensin
Gungrave (Subbed only)
Full Metal Alchemist
Full Metal Panic (No relation to FMA above)
Berserk *Special Note later*

If you like Manga, Hunter X Hunter is pretty good, and Berserk is awesome. Naruto and Bleach are both fun manga's to read even if you've seen the shows.

*Special Note* Berserk was supposed to be part of a three part series, but the studio only really did part 2. The Manga is much more complete and while definitely adult oriented is a great read.

Those should get you started.

Almost forgot.

Hajime No Ippo - Never got all the way through it, but it was good.

Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howls Moving Castle - Three of the most amazing movies by a visionary Japanese director. Absolute musts.

Saiyuki and Saiyuki Reload - Very adult oriented, rated R for language, violence, and sexual innuendo (Especially language and violence). But a very good and amusing series.

Hellsing - Get the english. Japanese doesnt do it justice, the voice acting in the dub is PERFECT.

Samurai Champloo - Another great samurai epic

Yu Yu Hakusho - Get it in english.

Gundam Wing - Classic

Gundam Seed - Less classic, but the only other gundam series I ever liked.

Akira - THE original anime movie. You aren't a true anime nerd until you've watched this.

Ive watched more anime than these, and of these that I've listed only Hajime No Ippo have I not seen the entire series.

In my opinion, if you're into anime, you have to see all these. Theyre great.

Also, many of these that are not movies have movies associated with them. Cowboy Bebop, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, Full Metal Alchemist, and more. The movies are worth watching too.

I'm going to modify this last part.

Visit the following sites and give them a read.

This is an alternative to ebay. A quick note. Torrenting as a method of download is extremely effective. However, it is your job to protect yourself by knowing what you get into, what you download, and if you are allowed to. Also, it is your responsibility to protect yourself from the many viruses and trojans and such that exist in the world today.

Spybot will help. Spybot is to this day one of the best anti spyware programs I have ever seen. Tea Timer is a great add on that helps block unwanted programs from running at all, and monitors your computer to ensure that changes arent made to sensitive areas without your knowledge.

Peer Guardian is a program designed to block hostile IPs. Any time you connect to any download, anyone else on that download can view your IP information. Peer guardian simply blocks you from accessing (and thereby you from being accessed) by a large range of known hostile IPs.

While it is in no way a guarantee, it is a help when you want to avoid IPs known to give bad downloads, or to be associated with groups like the RIAA and MPAA who target downloaders often regardless of the legality of their downloads.

This is how I got all the anime Ive ever watched, however most of the anime I have and have downloaded I got before it was licensed in the states (thus, when downloading it was completely legal). While anime is on the very low spectrum of awareness it is still a risk.

If you participate, keep teatimer and peer guardian 2 running whenever you are downloading anything.

My favourite anime is Inuyasha. Its about a half demon boy who lives in feudal Japan and this present day girl named Kagome who falls through a well and is transported back in time, she sees Inuyasha pinned to a tree by an arrow and she ends up realeasing him. She is the reincarnation of a priestess Inuyasha fell in love with named Kikyo and when Kikyo died an all powerful jewel was cremated with her body. This jewel comes out of Kagomes body and she accidently splits it into thousands of shards. These shards are all powerful so now she must team up with Inuyasha to collect them all. That is a VERY brief summary of the anime but theres alot to it like love traingles, deception, killing, meeting friends etc.

I'm a big anime fan too. Wow, I love Naruto too. Haha. Some good anime I've watched and I suggest are Inuyasha, Death Note, Ouran High School Host Club and Azumanga Daioh. The last two are high school type ones. Death Note is interesting due to action and the characters. Inuyasha has some of the stuff Naruto does. Like, the humor and the out there random action. I do, however, prefer Sesshomaru in the show.. 0o Haha. I like the bad guys almost all the time. Anyway, I hope these helped. Ever wanna talk or something: izzy_uchiha@yahoo.com
P.S Bleach IS a very good anime. Haha. Love it.

My FAVORITE one is Deathnote, it's about a kid who finds a book that belonged to a death god. The kid can write peoples names in the book and they die. He uses the book to kill criminals. Eventually the police catch on and try to hunt him down. It's a great story about him using the deathnote as a tool to help him escape the police.

You should check it out.

azumanga daioh is really good and funny, though it doesnt have any of the fantastical elements of the ones you mentioned, its more an anime just about high school life.
