Being an extra is a very poor way to start a career in acting, as it won't help you get "noticed" at all. That said, bands typically give open calls for extras in their music videos. Weezer had one recently, and Story Of The Year did one back for their shoot for Anthem Of Our Dying Day. [ Comrade's advice column | Ask Comrade A Question ]

If you want to be an extra in a movie, music video, etc, there is a lot of stuff online that you can sign up for, I had an internet friend who actually got to be an extra zombie in dawn of the dead. These places put out adds asking for 50 random people, and they interview you. BUT, don't expect to get recognized for playing an extra like that. But the money is nice, she got payed 300$, plus the plane ticket to fly there and back.
