People use the natural shades during the day, b/c they want to look as naturally beautiful as possible, in daylight. Evening makeup is supposed to be darker however, b/c its night time, and they want a more dramatic affect. So with your pallete, you can use the natural colors during the day, and inthe evening, match your eyeshadow to the color you are wearing. For instance, if you are wearing a hot pink shirt, wear white on your browline, and hotpink in the crease, I do gold on my actual eye lid. You want the color of your outfit, to be your eye shadow color b/c it brings out your eyes, but not drastically, ya know.

I think the pallete is a good idea, b/c you can use all those colors eventually to match whatever outfit your wearing.

You're right you don't want to overdo the colors which is why you match one dark color with the naturals and it looks good.

Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns, I know a little bit about makeup so I'll be happy to help in way I can. :)
