"smell the cheese" ?

what does the phrase "smell the cheese" mean?

It means someone farted and you can smell it all the way from where you are.

Or the person thats saying it is really joking around saying they farted but they really didn't.

It could mean tow things:

1) Something is SO cheesy (i.e. tacky, etc) that you could practically smell the cheese.

2) Someone tooted.
